The Chinese Restaurant

"It hit me like a brick, right between the eyes. Picture the scene. I’m sitting in my favorite Chinese Buffet just finishing my 3rd helping of peanut butter chicken and peppered squid. Ya, you heard me right. And in case you’re wondering, it’s to die for. I’m in the process of wrapping up a business meeting with a young man who we’ll call John, who reminds me of myself at his age. Enthusiastic, yet somewhat naïve, but with HUGE potential. John has spent the last hour drilling me with questions about how I was able to go from absolute poverty status, to making more in a month than most people make in a year. I couldn’t resist spilling my guts to this young man, I told him EVERYTHING. After all, I was in John’s shoes just a few years prior and what I would have given to have some great advice, some tips, heck, maybe even a little mentorship from someone who had been there and done that."

What was I doing 10 years ago this day?

"After asking for the check, a thought flashed in my mind  releasing a flood of memories and emotions from a former life. A life that was close enough that the after taste was still in my mouth, but far enough away to know that I’d never sample another bit. Here’s what I was thinking. I simply imagined, “What would I have been doing this very day … this very minute … ten years ago when I was John’s age?” Now I can assure you that the following is strictly a coincidence, and that’s the reason it came so powerfully to me at the time. Ten years prior to this day, I would have been sitting in the cafeteria of the large 3 story, concrete, government building located directly across the street from where I was sitting at that very moment."

"You see, I was an employee of that agency, a receptionist to be exact, and I would have been on my lunch break. I would have been sitting by myself in the corner of the cafeteria enjoying my sack lunch. Usually a sandwich consisting of some kind of meat, and some kind of cheese. It really didn’t matter which kind, because even though one said chicken, and one said ham, another Swiss, and yet another American, the cheap stuff really all tastes the same. What I would have given for some cafeteria purchased tater tots. Eating at a restaurant was absolutely out of the question."

"I didn’t have many friends at my place of employment because I just didn’t really relate to many people there. I couldn’t understand why people, most of whom didn’t seem to enjoy their jobs, would remain in that job for ten, twenty, even as much as forty years, just churning away on the treadmill.
